David Carson Visual Response

David Carson is a jerk. My zine explains why.

I was mostly satirizing David Carson’s place in the design community, and how his personality/attitude almost overshadows his work. I was also putting his work in the context of design history by beginning with a very structured, International Style approach to the layout, and gradually making it more and more in Carson’s trademark style. I based a few of the opening comments on some of the things we said in our class discussion. These photos aren’t the entire zine, but they do show the progression of styles. I made about 10 of these and had them for sale at Art Market. I only sold two copies, but I did get a whole lot of “Who’s David Carson?” It’s simple. He’s a jerk!
